Vilsack: Mexico’s Ban on GMO Corn Not to Include Livestock Feed

Following conversations with Mexico’s ag secretary, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack made it known that Mexico’s ban on GMO corn and their imports will apply to grain used for human food products, but not to livestock feed.

At a virtual event hosted by the National Press Club, Vilsack said that limiting the ban to food products will significantly lessen the impact on the U.S.

In late 2020 Mexico announced an executive order for the banning of GMO corn for human consumption over the course of three years, alleging that GMO corn threatened native domestic varieties of the grain, and pledging that local production will replace imports by 2024.

Last year Mexican feed companies used about 11.1 million tons of imported corn, the bulk of which was sourced from U.S. farmers, representing about 70 percent of total corn sales for the year.
