This Partnership is Working to Reintroduce Camelina Crops
Montana-based Sustainable Oils is partnering with EarthDaily Agro to reintroduce camelina crops in the U.S. as a feedstock for sustainable, renewable diesel fuel production.
Currently, camelina acreage is a fraction of corn, soybeans, or wheat - but the companies noted that the intention isn’t to replace other grain crops, but to partner with them by targeting two main growing periods: during wheat fallow rotations when camelina could be planted in place of fallowing, and in double crop areas where it would benefit from a short-season, overwinter crop - two ideal conditions for camelina.
The addition of camelina would give farmers the benefits of a cover crop, including improving the soil and adding biomass, and also provides another harvestable crop, creating additional revenue streams.
Through the partnership, EarthDaily Agro will provide Earth Observation services and value-added analytics to drive cultivation efficiencies, give yield modeling, and offer paths to mitigate risk and scale acreage.
