Merit Opens First Facility in the World Able to Produce Food-Grade Canola Protein

Merit Functional Foods has officially opened its new 94,000-square-foot plant-based protein facility in Winnipeg, and is now beginning to optimize its highest purity canola and pea proteins for use by the food and beverage industries.

This plant, which is the first commercial facility in the world able to produce food-grade canola protein, will have the flexibility to run both pea and/or canola with an initial requirement of 25,000 tons of raw materials - a requirement that may increase to 100,000 tons per year with expansion.

With the plant now online, the company is working to optimize its manufacturing process to best meet the demand for “better-tasting, better-functioning, and better-for-you plant protein”, and is ready to begin collaborating with brands across the industry.
