Matthews Cotswold, Flour Managing Director: “Regeneratively Farmed Products will Overtake Organic”

Bertie Matthews, managing director of Matthews Cotswold Flour, believes that over the next decade, sales of regeneratively farmed food products will overtake organic sales, and is calling on all food producers to shift toward regenerative sourcing models.

Organic farming produces food without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or antibiotics, and despite its popularity with consumers, has remained relatively niche due to its high production costs and lower productivity.

Regenerative farming is a production model that grows food while protecting and improving soil health, biodiversity, water retention, and quality. It’s all about improving the land using practices including crop diversity, low soil disturbance, livestock integration, and a host of other options.

Both systems sound positive, however, the big difference between them is yield, soil quality, and fertility - giving regeneratively produced products the advantage of hitting price points more comparative to non-organic foods.
