ADM Announces New Sustainability Targets

As part of its Corporate Sustainability Report, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) announced new sustainability targets that include the aggressive goals of reducing water intensity by 10 percent, and achieving a 90 percent landfill diversion rate by 2035.

Company chairman and CEO Juan Luciano stated that challenges such as the current COVID-19 pandemic shed even greater light on the importance of such goals, adding that as global leaders such as ADM focus on maintaining the global supply chain, they must also focus on the future. Earlier this year, the company announced its intentions to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent and energy intensity by 15 percent over the same time period. Additional plans included the development of a path to reduce water intensity for high-risk and water-scarce areas. The new targets align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and follow ADM’s original “15X20” plan released in 2011 outlining the company’s commitment to per-unit improvements in energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, water, and waste to landfill by 2020, which are being met ahead of schedule.
