Port of Oswego Expansion to Increase Grain Shipping Capacity

The Port of Oswego, New York, announced plans for an expansion that will include the construction of a state-of-the-art agricultural export center.

Made possible by $15 million in state grant funding awarded as part of the state’s $65 million commitment to modernize upstate ports, the project, called the Central New York Agricultural Export Center, will include a new storage dome, silo, tunnel, belt conveyor system, and a USDA-approved agricultural sampling laboratory.

The $15 million from the state will cover approximately 85 percent of the cost of the project, which will have the capacity to move more than 15,000 metric tons of grain. It also will be the largest agricultural development project in central New York, giving the region’s farmers a new marketing channel for their crops.

These upgrades will also improve grain storage conditions allowing for longer periods of holding, and will enable ships to spend less time at the port, allowing for a higher rate of vessel traffic.
