Biotech Startup C16 Biosciences Has Developed Lab-Created Palm Oil

Biotechnology startup C16 Biosciences has developed a method to create a sustainable, environmentally-friendly palm oil alternative in a laboratory. Used in a vast number of applications from food, to fuel, health and beauty products, to clothing, the palm oil industry has grown to be worth $88 billion, but has also come under fire for deforestation and habitat loss.

C16 has successfully taken yeast that grows in tap water, then feeding it a carbon source feedstock to multiply, effectively uses a fermentation process similar to beer brewing to create an ecologically sound replacement for palm oil, with the goal of initially using it in the skincare and cosmetics industries.
