Canada to Establish Working Group to Resolve China Canola Issues
Canada’s Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau and International Trade Diversification Minister Jim Carr announced they have established a working group consisting of representatives from the Canola Council of Canada, the Canadian Canola Growers Association, Richardson International, Viterra, and the governments of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
As trade tensions continue to lead to the refusal of Canadian canola shipments by China, the group is being tasked with two goals: to conduct a coordinated and collaborative effort in resolving the issues affecting Canada’s canola exports, and to explore alternative markets for both the short and long term.
Additionally, in response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement about the possibility of a Canadian delegation going to China to conduct talks, Bibeau has reached out to her Chinese counterpart with a request to move forward in that direction.
If such a delegation is welcomed by China, it would be led by Dr. Siddika Mithani, president of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and would include plant health experts from the CFIA, and technical experts from the Prairie provinces.
