U.S. Gov’t Shutdown Could Lead to Volatile Grain Markets

This year has begun amid a U.S. government shutdown that is preventing the issuance of updated data reports from the Department of Agriculture.

As the shutdown continues, reports on critical market information such as grain export sales have been non-existent, and grain market participants are resorting to hearsay gathered from social media platforms such as Twitter to gain information.

Furthermore, as the new year begins and investment funds rebalance and look to shift capital, the response of relying on the media and Twitter to make up for the lack of data has ag industry watchers expecting increased volatility.
