Major Organic Seed, Feed, and Milling Company Closing

Homestead Organics, a major Ontario, Canada-based organic seed, feed, and flour milling company announced it is closing. The move is a direct result of greater competitiveness in the industry.

Founded 30 years ago in Berwick, Ontario, over the years Homestead has expanded to include locations in the towns of Morrisburg and Sebringville.

At its peak the company was earning $15 million per year and was seeing a growth rate of 30 percent per year. However, as organic became more mainstream, Tom Manley, president of Homestead Organics, said that larger businesses entering the category made it harder for niche businesses such as his to compete.
