USDA Announces Primary Farm Bill Legislative Principles for 2018
On January 24, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue outlined the main U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Bill and Legislative Principles for 2018.
At a town hall-style meeting held in Mifflintown, Pennsylvania, Perdue explained that the principles will be used as a means of communicating the will of U.S. farmers to Congress.
The department has created a nine-point list of principles with the top item in terms of priorities being farm production and conservation, followed by aligning the farm bill with international trade laws and obligations, and then food, nutrition, and consumer services. Other goals include the safeguarding of the U.S. food supply, the strengthening of inspections, the support of research, and maintaining financial responsibility.
