Organic and Non-GMO Industry Needs Infrastructure: Pipeline Foods CEO Eric Jackson
Eric Jackson, chief executive of Pipeline Foods, the first U.S.-based food supply chain company focused solely on establishing sustainable global supply chains for organic and non-GMO food and feed, spoke at the annual Organic and Non-GMO Forum held November 6-7, 2017, in St. Louis, Missouri stating that the organic and non-GMO industry suffers from a “crooked supply chain”.
Jackson estimates that there are fewer than 200 certified organic and non-GMO facilities, with only half of those being of commercial scale or having access to rail. This leads to higher use of truck transportation which cuts into margins.
He went on to call for added investment in the space, stating that there is the potential to invest between $300 million and $500 million over the next three to five years to create systems that entail greater transparency and a “shared value approach”.
