On-Farm Grain Storage Expected to Hit New Record in Australia
Grain volumes stored on-farm in Australia are expected to reach a new record this year, driving by bumper crops and historically low prices for wheat and barley.
The use of temporary storage solutions such as plastic silo or ‘sausage’ bags is on the rise with many farmers directly filling the bags as they harvest their grain.
The excess available grain and its method of storage are leading to concerns about infestation and contamination by vermin and insects. Concerns are also rising over the length of time grain can be successfully stored in such a way, with experts warning that grain storage in silo bags is viable on a short-term basis of up to four months, despite some growers storing their grain for between 12 and 18 months.
