Land O’Lakes to Acquire Feed Business from Southern States Co-op
Land O’Lakes has agreed to acquire the animal feed business of Southern States Cooperative Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
The transaction would include seven Southern States feed mills but would not encompass its retail stores – feed accounts for 20 percent of Southern States’ overall business, not including pet food.
The announcement comes only months after Land O’Lakes forged a supply agreement with Southern States’ WinField United crop inputs and insights unit.
The addition of Southern States’ feed business assets to Land O’Lakes will place Land O’Lakes as the number two player in the U.S. feed industry with a combined annual tonnage of 13,700 million metric tons (mmt) behind Cargill Animal Nutrition with annual tonnage of 19,200 mmt.
“This is an excellent opportunity to expand our relationship with Southern States and increase our animal feed business in the eastern U.S.,” said Chris Policinski, president and CEO, Land O’Lakes.
