EPA Approves Low-Volatility Formula of Monsanto’s Dicamba Herbicide
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted approval to XtendiMax, the low-volatility formula for Monsanto’s dicamba herbicide developed for use with genetically modified soy and cotton crops.
The new formulation has proven to vaporize less and to not drift off target as much, however the company still needs to secure regulatory approval from individual states before the herbicide can be marketed to U.S. farmers. Despite this, Monsanto estimates that XtendiMax will be available prior to the next growing season.
Over the past two years Monsanto has introduced its Round Ready Xtend soybean and Bollgard II XtendFlex cotton varieties – both resistant to dicamba, however, farmers were reluctant to use the seeds in conjunction with an illegal “off-label” version of the herbicide.
