Mozambique Expanding State Owned Grain Infrastructure
The government of Mozambique is investing US$55 million to fund two separate expansion projects for the state-owned Matola Silos and Grain Terminal Company (STEMA) with the goal of increasing the country’s grain reserve capacity and to ease supplies to the domestic market, reports All Africa.
The projects will increase grain storage capacity from 45,000 tons to 110,000 tons and will fund the construction of a new grain terminal at the northern port of Nicala that will have a storage capacity of 100,000 tons.
The expansion projects are also complimentary to the dredging of Mozambique’s Maputo port access channel from 11 meters to 14.2 meters, which will allow for vessels of up to 80,000 tons enter the port.
