First Shipment of Non-GMO Corn from Ukraine Arrives in India
A shipment of 40,000 tons of non-GMO corn shipped from Ukraine has been accepted by India’s PEC Ltd, according to Reuters. The state-run trader finalized the terms for the shipment in December, making this the first non-GMO overseas purchase for India in sixteen years.
As India has banned GMO food crops, a shipment consisting of only non-GMO corn was not easy to secure due to the small number of countries that can produce such grain.
The contract was for a total of 250,000 tons, and a source close to the deal told Reuters that shipments for the balance of the contract will be received from Ukraine in the near future.
