Kronan Feed Mill Touted the Most Modern in the World

The Kronan feed mill, owned by the Kalmar Lantmän co-op and located on the harbor of Kalmar in the south east of Sweden, is being called the most modern feed mill in the world.

Originally built to replace two older mills in the same location - one that produced 100,000 tons of cattle feed per year, and the second that produced 100,000 tons of pig and poultry feed per year, the new mill officially opened in April 2014 at a construction cost of €50 million.

After 25 months of construction, the mill is 3,000 square meters with 13 floors. It produces poultry, pig and cattle feed in one factory with a production capacity of 100 tons per hour through five production lines.

The mill provides Kalmar Lantmän with improved flexibility to serve its customers through increased variability in feed formulas, increasing from 15 formulas to 50, and the reduced change-time between different products from 30 minutes to just a couple of minutes.

The mill has two hammer mills with automatic screen exchange and a roller mill for the grinding of raw materials. The site’s 52 raw material silos each have their own dosing scale giving the facility the ability to produce 30 4-ton batches an hour. If an ingredient is incorrectly dosed, it can go back to the correct silo and be re-weighed. The mill also has state of the art pellet mills, coolers, and hygiene systems before the finished product is stored in one of the 96 finished product silos. Once finished, the feed is loaded at one of three loading stations, each equipped with a double robot scale for the highest efficiency and flexibility.

The site is one of the most highly hygienic, energy efficient, and sustainable feed mills in the world, using gravity and energy recovery systems to heat water and liquids, while the site’s advanced modular compressed air system uses 30% less energy compared to traditional systems. Looking toward the future, the building is set for the installation of a sixth production line that will lift the mill’s production capacity to 120 tons per hour.
