Officials Find $870 Million in Soybean Smuggling Into China

Last year Beijing launched a campaign called ‘Green Wind’ designed to expose the smuggling of grains, sugar, and cotton into China, through which, 487 cases of tax evasion, worth US$1.16 billion, were found. During the ‘Green Wind’ investigations, customs officials in Qingdao also uncovered cases of soybean smuggling to the value of US$869.5 million – one of the biggest such smuggling cases the country has seen. The cases were discovered in Qingdao after the city’s customs unit seized 730 contracts, some of which were falsified, and 80,000 emails leading to the arrest of four people in the three cities of Linyi, Dalian, and Shenzhen.
